The market is a bustling place where you need to move quickly to avoid being in other people’s way. The vendors prefer to sell items by the kilo and it is much cheaper to buy fruit at the market than in a store – I bought a kilogram of kiwifruit for R12!! (That’s less than two dollars!)
This is not only a tourist activity as many locals go to the market to buy food rather than a supermarket, so this is a true Latin American experience. In between the stalls there are restaurants where you can sit down to have lunch.
The Mercado de Abastos Tirso del Molina is one of my favourite buildings in Santiago and inside you can continue your shopping experience (it’s close to La Vega) to buy more fruit downstairs or clothes on the upper level.
